Diwan Alomran is pleased to announce its participation with the Habitat International Coalition (HIC) in the activities of Urban October and World Habitat Day.
World Habitat Day is an international occasion celebrated annually by the United Nations on the first Monday of October. It aims to draw attention to the importance of realizing the right to adequate housing as a fundamental human right, and to highlight the reality of human settlements, including cities around the world, and the crises and challenges they face.
This day represents a call for collective action toward more inclusive, just, and sustainable human settlements, and to ensure a dignified life for all—particularly in light of the growing challenges such as rapid urban expansion, development projects based on the forced eviction of local communities, mass displacement caused by wars and conflicts, and the impacts of climate change.
Diwan Alomran’s participation stems from its role as an institution dedicated to advancing urban thought and practice through research, projects, and programs, and in support of the human right to more inclusive and sustainable cities in the Arab world. This participation marks a step toward uniting international and local efforts to promote the right to adequate habitat for all, to ensure tenure security in all its forms, and to condemn policies of forced eviction.
In line with this year’s World Habitat Day theme chosen by UN-Habitat, “Resilient Urban Economies: Cities as Drivers of Growth and Recovery,” we will continue to play our part in addressing urban crises, including those of human origin, which continue to affect many of our communities.
